Weekend Round Up #19

My apologies for missing last week. I had family up and by the time I got home the last thing I could think of doing was writing... (that sounds horrible, right? I was just really tired...)

So, let's dive into the geeky world I live in.

First up - exciting dinosaur news. The world's largest dinosaur has been found in Patagonia. According to estimates it would have stood twenty metres tall and forty metres long. I was so excited to hear about this and it even made our nightly news. Plus, when I told my students they were just as interested as I was.

Next we have the first teaser for series 8 of the amazing Doctor Who.

I mean, it's not showing us much but I can't wait for August. And the iconic music is enough to get me all excited. The countdown is definitely on.

And, although this might not be 'geeky' per se, it's freaking amazing.

I appreciate a good dance crew and The Company, as they are known, are just amazing. I can't believe they only got second place. They have amazing body control and the music they chose was perfect.

Then there was this little video:

The University of Delaware recreated the iconic Friends opening. It's pretty awesome even if Friends has been re-run a billion times... I guess I will always have a soft spot for this show the same way I have a soft spot for The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. They are so iconic to my childhood.

Then we have tumblr user Ask the Derpvengers  amusing cartoon of how Fury wakes the Avengers. It's dreadfully cute.

Bonus: I bet you thought I hadn't seen it or had forgotten about the fact that JJ Abrams released this little snippet.

Well I didn't...and it's awesome. Practical effects rather than CGI wins my heart anyway.

Weekly Round Up #13

The countdown is on for the school holidays. Then I might have some time...aside from marking 180+ assessments.

Anyway, on with the show.

Number one -

This website: Bring Down The King

It's a advertising stunt going on in Square in Auckland. Basically, they have a statue of King Joffrey with a rope around him. Every tweet of #bringdowntheking helps tighten the rope. As far as stunts go I'm actually impressed with this one. Plus, it's from my home country so way to go, New Zealand!

Then there is the trailer to the film Lucy

It looks interesting. I think there may be a lot of plot holes but it grabbed my attention. Plus, Morgan Freeman...

For those of you who are fitness fanatics or for those who want to get into fitness check out this website: http://neilarey.com

I know you're wondering what this has to do with anything nerdy or geeky but just look at the following.

There are tones more on Neila Ray's website and I am pretty sure that I'm going to give them a go. I mean, anything to motivate you into moving, right?

Then there was this...

Just going to leave that there...

And, finally, another music video. This time a parody of Jason Derulo's "Talk Dirty" (which I haven't actually heard) called "Talk Nerdy".

Now, I have to get back to marking some assessments.
Peace and pancakes

Weekend Round Up #3

Here we are for another weekend round up - albeit I feel like I am cutting it close as it is Sunday evening but we have a long weekend due to it being Auckland Anniversary Weekend so I should get an extra day, right? No...okay then...

This week has been an interesting one - I'm on anti-inflamatories due to minor cartilege damage in my knee and ankle. (Apparently running isn't my friend...) And we finally received our 'get-ready-to go-back-to-school-cause-the-summer-holidays-are-over' letters. So it's all back to business next week though I am determined to stick to my writing schedule as well. :)

Anyway, enough about me. Enjoy my weekend round up of random stuff that I found interesting.

5. This is the awesome that is NPH and Jason Segel singing a snippet of Les Miserable. For the musical theatre geek in me this brings me great amounts of joy and smiles. How can you not love these two!

4. This is a brilliant TED talk done by a 13 year old. I love the message that he is giving to us all and I really agree with some of the things he has brought up. I think I'm going to use this as a resource in my classes this year, especially when some of my students say they can't do a speech or they don't know what they like. So have some inspiration and enjoy!.

3. If you haven't heard of the Anime/Manga Attack on Titan this might seem mighty strange to you but this ad for Subaru is brilliant and it's hinting or leading up to the live action film version which I would be interested to see...The anime is brilliant however. (Warning: The anime is very violent...you have been warned!!!)

2. Dose of Cuteness Click this link to be taken to photos of a baby girl whose father has dressed her in all sorts of possible future jobs...I'm partial to seeing her become the first female Pope...(from the ever awesome themarysue.com)

1. And to round this weekend up is this article from www.io9.com . It's all about micro housing. I've been fascinated by this for some time, partially due to the fact that my father is a builder and he has been looking into this idea for easy and affordable housing. The prices in NZ are going up and obtaining a loan is becoming incredibly difficult.

Do you think you could live in a micro house? I think I could though I don't know if I could give away all my books and DVDs.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

Peace and pancakes,
Jaime

Weekend Round Up #1

So, this is just going to be a weekly round up of things that I did or found exciting over the week. I'm still trying to figure out my schedule and - as I am still on Summer Break for school I have a little time to get a routine going. This one will be a bit short because I didn't realise I was going to do this until this morning... (so prepared, I know.) Anyway, happy weekend to everyone.

1. This awesome video by Anaria. It's a 'rock' cover of Ed Sheeran's 'I See Fire' from The Hobbit The Desolation of Smaug. I was impressed by the video, especially the costumes. (I'm a sucker for fun cosplay.)

2. Okay, this came out last week some time but still - the film poster for The Fault in Our Stars. I'm excited for this for two reasons. One, I loved the book (John Green is amazing!). Two, I get to teach this to my students this year. Bring on the sadness and the awesome all rolled into one. DFTBA.

3. A woman from Quebec, Canada spent $30,000 to transform her basement into the Starship Enterprise (Original Series) Read more here. Talk about your dedication.

4. Best pregnancy announcement? I'll let you decide...

5. Normally I would try to round up things that are more geek/nerd related but this is important. A young man (not boy!) died after tackling a suicide bomber who was trying to enter a school. He sacrificed himself to save a school. Read more about it here and here. This young man is a hero and his act bravery is very powerful. Extremely powerful. I really do recommend everyone taking five minutes out of their day to read about Aitzaz Hasan.
