Did you just say 'gimp' mask?

Me: Okay class, I need you to tell me what costumes you would wear to a costume party?
Student 1: Pirate
Student 2: MasterChief from Halo
Student 3: Gimp mask
Me: What? No! No! You would not wear that.

For the love of the flying spaghetti monster why does a 13 year old student know about gimp masks? I found myself shocked and feeling a little more naive than I'm used to. It's those rose coloured glasses that I keep forgetting to take off because I swear, when I was that age, I didn't know diddly squat. I had a basic understanding of sex but, at thirteen, it wasn't something that I obsessed over. Actually, I didn't even think about it since there were far too many other things to be thinking about. Plus I was a nerd and, quite possibly, one of the most awkward people ever. (I'm still rather awkward as the following exchange may prove)

Student: Miss, you are just like Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory.
Me: I am? *Quirk's eyebrow*
Student: Yeah but with better social skills.
Me: Heh yay.

Obviously, I am still at a loss to fully understand a lot of social situations. So much, in fact, that I've been thinking of getting a tag made that says 'I am socially awkward, if I look confused please inform me of the proper social protocol.'
I often find myself standing in a bar or pub, waiting for friends and feeling as if someone will turn and point at me before telling me that I am not allowed to be in there. Or, I'll arrive early somewhere and I'm never sure if I go in and wait or if I shall wait in my car and then I'm stuck. But that's just one of my many quirks. It's nothing that I'm ashamed of and, like I tell my students, if you can't laugh at yourself...well, you know what I mean.

Anyway, it's the weekend, and the sun is out. This means I'll probably be inside all day. So I will wrap it up here since I have washing to do and lessons to plan.

Peace and pancakes.

Why I smiled this week...

Okay, my last few posts have been kind of...um...crappy? Pun totally intended. But I also have noticed that they have all been about the random misfortunes that seem to follow me like a bad smell. (Another pun, boy I am on fire...)*

So, for a change of pace, I thought I would do a little post on things that have made me smile in the last week. If you don't want your heart to melt or to indulge in saccharine silliness you may want to avoid this post. Or watch the following clip -

So, where was I? That's right, things that made me smile in the last week. There were a lot more things that I originally thought so I have narrowed it down to the top ten.

One: This video of Adam Savage from Mythbusters singing 'I Will Survive' in the voice of Gollum. Gollum finds his inner diva.

Two: Having coffee and the world's best bagel with one of my dearest friends. (Seriously, it was the best bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese plus the pesto was brilliant.)

Three: Ordering a Kindle on Friday and having it arrive on Tuesday. Now, before you start jumping up and down claiming that a book lover should not have a Kindle let me tell you the main reason I clicked the buy now button - I travel quite a bit and if I buy, on average, 3-5 books on every trip it makes my bag heavy and costs quite a bit. This way I'll always have a book on hand. Hey, wait a moment, why the hell am I explaining myself to you...I wanted one so I bought one.

Four: Dancing like a loon on 'Just Dance 2' on the wii - and consequently getting my arsed kicked by a twelve year old.

Five: Getting a birthday call from my youngest neice. At two her English isn't great but it sure is funny. After saying 'birthday' she screamed 'muffins' at the top of her lungs and just giggled for three minutes.

Six: Having a load of washing go through without stopping. (My washing machine is far too old and hates me and every five minutes I have to go and untangle everything)

Seven: Realising that someone had, stupidly, gone through the bag of poo thinking that they had scored a new pair of jeans...(This isn't exactly a nice reason to smile but I did laugh. )

Eight: Hearing that my sister finally found a new house to rent. She lives in Christchurch and, especially with the quakes, has been finding everything difficult.

Nine: All the lovely birthday wishes from all my great friends, old and new, from around the world. You are all awesome.

Ten: This!

Well, that's all for today. I should be back to my normal snarky self come Friday. Peace and pancakes all.

*This kinda proves how reclusive I am, right? That I find puns so enjoyable?

In which it is no longer Monday

Excuse me one moment while I dance around relishing the fact that it is no longer Monday...feel free to enjoy the following tune and comedy routine while I do my thing...

Ah, must better. Sorry for getting that song stuck in your head, by the way. Just had to have something absolutely random to entertain you while I indulged my five year old self. Anyway, I am facing today not so much head on but in a diagonally forward facing position. Yesterday is but a memory and tomorrow is but a fancy...wow, does that sound familiar to anyone or have I just created a nice little quote? Either way it's pretty neat.

I guess I have a bad case of wanderlust? Is that the right term? I have been back in New Zealand for nearly two years and my life has stalled although my writing has flourished. And I don't like playing the waiting game. So, while I work in the mornings making instant coffee for truck drivers before spending the afternoon writing I find myself checking my email every few moments - expecting to see some form of news but alas, I have wasted a few seconds and there is nothing there. It is really a case of waiting for the pot to boil and, as much as I realise I don't control it I still wait and wish...

Anyway, I just wanted to thank those who read my post yesterday and thank all those wonderful people who seem to drop into my life whenever I need them the most. (Oh boy is this ever cheesy).

I promise that more witty and brilliant posts will be coming up in the near future. Ones where I don't resemble a stressed bunny gnawing on her fingernails...

So I will leave you with this lovely little ditty - DFTBA

Yes it is rather melancholic but it is beautiful...
